Sun, sea and sex provide the basic ingredients for one of de Rome's most uncomplicated and highly enjoyable narrative films. Complete with a fur-lined seduction lair, an impromptu freeform dance sequence and tactile play in the neighbor's pool. The Fire Island Kids invites its audience to consider fun and freedom as a right, not a privilege. bfi

Notes
The scenes are of mid-week Fire Island - weekends are much more frenzied· Richard and I were not big on "gay" Fire Island· Generally we went over only a couple of times a season·
For many years, I used to drive almost daily to the Fire Island beach opposite our home, or by a small sailboat I owned· I took long late day swims far out into the ocean, or ran the beach·
I'm sure the encounter de Rome depicted occurred many times· The setting is Fire Island Pines, the more "refined" of the two mainly gay communities on the beach· The Grove is the other, within walking distance a mile or so to the west. Between them is the "meat-rack"·
