A relatively late entry in the cycle of de Rome's 'solo' films, in which the male subject performs for the camera, Brown Study is worthy of special attention. Juxtaposing close-ups of a modern American black man with classic portraits of Nuba of Kau, the film becomes a kind of meta-ethnographic work, posing questions about how 'civilised' society perceives of, and deals with 'others'. bfi.

Brown Study is one of my favorite shorts in this anthology· It is an "extra," the original of which was released in 1979, after the films of the main program were released and compiled· We see a beautiful male form juxtaposition with the Nuba of Kau· De Rome takes Kevin Williams from an inner city playground to sit among the classic men of history.
