coming of age
Eastern Cape, South Africa. A lonely factory worker, Xolani, takes time off his job to assist during an annual Xhosa circumcision initiation into manhood. In a remote mountain camp that is off limits to women, young men, painted in white ochre, recuperate as they learn the masculine codes of their culture. In this environment of machismo and aggression, Xolani cares for a defiant initiate from Johannesburg, Kwanda, who quickly learns Xolani's best kept secret, that he is in love with another man. The Wound is a moving portrayal of a rite-of-passage of pubescent boys of Xhosa, a south African tribe· In the ceremony, which is referred to as ulwaluko, the act sealing their manhood is circumcision· The boys receive their "manhood" education from the elders during the healing period. Kwamda, a city boy, is sent to the ceremony as an "initiate" by his father, who hires Xolan as a "caregiver"· Xolan has had a long-time intimate relationship with Vija, another caregiver· Vija is married with children· While seperated during most of the year, their relationship gets re-consummated at every ulwaluko· Kwamda, who himself is gay, quickly discovers

Myth of Father is a video documentary about acceptance. My father, Jodie, is a transsexual woman. She came out to me a few years ago and I've since begun a journey to discover who my father really is. Upon learning of my father's gender dysphoria, I've had to rewind, review, then reposition the puzzle pieces of the past to try to figure out who my father is, not only for myself but for my family as well. In the film I contrast my relationship with my father with the relationship between my father and her own dad. I interview my father, as well as other family members who relate their remembrances of Jodie's youth: "He seemed to live the normal life. He was into cars, he was into rock bands, he went into the Army...married...child..." But no one really knew Jodie, as she explains, "No one knew who I was. I trashed relationships with everyone I knew, including my own son." My family tries to understand who Jodie has become in relation to the person they knew as Bruce. I took my father's news as an opportunity to give my family a chance to express themselves about each other in an attempt to re-establish a bond within our family. My journey culminates in a family reunion, where many of the family members meet Jodie for the first time. Ultimately this documentary is an exploration of the struggle of family members reuniting while going through a change in their relationships.

A very brief video history of the word "gay." I have started using the word "queer" as a inclusive positive expression of sexuality that is not strictly between female and male, although I also like "gay"-I am a happy person! In my personal writting I frequently use the word "gaymen" or "gaymale" when I want to be specific as to gender.

AIDS; bdsm; HIV
A writer dying of AIDS searches for a cure and human interaction in the hospitals and sex clubs of Buenos Aires. This is not a feel good film, and A Year Without Love makes no overt pleas for pity or anger· Tthe film (said to be based on poet Pablo Prez’s diary of the same title, which was published in 1996), documents the last year of his life· It takes place in that period of the AIDS epidemic when the disease prognosis transitioned from a near certain death sentence to a more treatable chronic but not fatal condition. Many HIV/AIDS films are political and activists focused· A Year Without Love is one person's, a poet's, very personal view· One of the better films on HIV/AIDS I've seen this year.

After breaking up with Norberto who ran away to Iceland, Bruno wants to find him. Arnau, a local tour guide in Reykjavik, will enroll in his search. Their trip will become a grieving process until they reach the remote island of Grimsey. An austere Nordic/Icelandic parable where the landscape plays as much importance to the story as the actors.
Grímsey is a small Icelandic island, 25 miles off the north coast of the main island of Iceland, straddling the Arctic Circle. The island has only about 90 full time inhabitants· The film spends little time on Grimsey; most of our time is spent getting there·

From the segregated American South to the fashion capitals of the world, operatic fashion editor André Leon Talley's life and career are on full display, in a poignant portrait that includes appearances by Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Bethann Hardison, Valentino, and Manolo Blahnik. I have little interest in fashion· I no fashion sense what's so ever (although I usually check to make sure my socks match-usually they're white)· I'll wait for this one to show up as VOD.

bullying; homophobia
Tim is a bit of a loner. At school he gravitates towards another shy boy and they become friends. But the verbal and physical bullying by a gang of kids, as well as an aggressive use of social media, unsettle Tim’s new mate and he backs away from him – an act of cowardice which will have serious repercussions. As a result of Tim’s unwillingness to snitch, the bullies appear to get away with their actions, none more so than the gang’s leader Jeff. He’s one of the school’s star athletes, who seems guaranteed a place in the national championships with an 800m time of 1.54 minutes. When Tim decides to start training in order to go up against Jeff, even having a girlfriend as cover, his enemies seem willing to go to any lengths to stop him. 1:54 is very dark tale of the possible consequences of schoolyard bullying and homophobia.· In recent years' there have been many films that deal with bullying and homophobia. and it's tragic consequences· Most bring back memories of my own youth·

As a boy in the mid-1950s, probably then in junior high school, I was harassed by a boy a couple of years older than I· It mostly occurred as I walked home from school and passed his house· By most modern day standards, it was pretty mild· "L" (I don't wish to use his real name), to my recollection, never was physically abusive; just verbally threatening· I was scared of him· I never understood his issue· While by that age I would have had sex with other boys, I am fairly certain that "L"would not have been aware of these encounters· After a short while, I solved the "problem" by taking another route home· While "L" appears in my school yearbooks, by what would have been his graduation year, he is absent from them· From the yearbook entries, he appears to have been somewhat of a loner· He married and continued to live in my hometown· He died in 2010·
Was there bullying in my high school? There no doubt was· But my school was very small by today's standards· Parents, teachers and administrators generally knew each other socially· I certainly believed my situation was unique· I never told anyone-parents or teachers· It was my problem to solve.

A sexy, romantic and uncomfortably chilling tale of lust and deception from first time director Marcelo Briem Stamm. Handsome middle class Manuel (Patrico Ramos), hurt by his previous relationship and bored being alone, meets Julio (Mario Veron), a rugged, lonely, unemployed young man in a chat room. The two eventually meet up in person and the sexual spark is quickly ignited. And while sex is satisfying and frequent, it is their collective problems with intimacy, trust and the fear of being hurt that make them hesitant to commit fully. As their relationship develops, both reveal secrets from their past but these revelations might be real, imagined or outright lies. Who is being truthful, who is real, and who truly loves the other? All is revealed in this romantic, passionate drama/thriller that offers a shocking, strangely satisfying conclusion. While Solo (Alone) has a somewhat predictable "thriller" plot (found while surfing Dekkoo on a Sunday evening), it was worth watching· While you are likely to figure out what is happening, the who-what-when is concealed pretty much to the end· It's an entertaining thriller·
