Since I was a young boy sitting on a booster seat in Hennessey's Barber Shop, I have felt both intimidated and awed by barber shops· Mr· Hennessey was both a barber and our town clerk· Folks came in to his shop for hunting and fishing licenses· The conversation there was man's talk· Today, the old 19th century wooden store building is gone, with its raised covered front porch and benches where the locals "studied on it·", replaced by a large flashy super market· Whenever I smell witch hazel, I still visualize this shop, even though it's been over sixty years since I've had a cut there.
