Nights in Black Leather was directed by Richard Abel under the pseudonym Ignatio Rutkowski. Peter Berlin stars as himself, a German immigrant walking around San Francisco looking for adventure. With scenes shot in North Beach, Land's End, and all over San Francisco, Nights in Black Leather is both an exciting erotic romp and a time capsule of gay life in San Francisco circa 1972.

A mysterious long-haired stranger climbs the stairs to Peter's rooftop home. They grapple and wrestle and eventually get down to some serious play. This two-part short film was filmed partially on a rooftop in Rome and partially in an apartment in Paris. The second part of the film is a romantic bedroom encounter with moody lighting and a full-length mirror.

Not long after Nights in Black Leather, Peter made his first silent short film. "Waldeslust" gives us Peter being spied on by a cute blond boy in the wilds of Land's End in San Francisco. The film culminates in an encounter between the two of them and features a controversial water sports scene that is sometimes cut from existing prints.
The only existing prints of "Waldeslust" are on 8mm, the way it was originally sold by mail order from Peter Berlin. The picture quality is fair, but the search goes on for a 16mm print in good condition. (GF Productions)

Notes
Nights in Black Leather, when compared to the slam-dunk, swish, swish of modern erotic movies, is pretty mild stuff -- Peter Berlin's narcistic obsession with his own "perfect" body came to be a dominate factor in gay youth culture -- I'm almost certain I saw this film at the Adonis Theater in NYC on Eighth Avenue with a friend of mine who was living nearby, but it could have been one of the other gay movie houses nearby -- it's a classic, and included in this collection because of its cultural significance -- it's one of the earliest full-length gay porn movies and was very popular with the NYC crowd; and helped to solidify San Francisco as the capital of Gaydom -- it was not until the early 1980s that AIDS came to fully dominate gay culture (the CDC publishe its first report on what was to become known as AIDS in 1981)-- this movie, said to have been been origally produced using 16 mm film, cinematically it is typical of the so-so quality of most porn of the era -- the film (although cinematically crude in many respects, and along with a handfull of other producers, such as Wakefield Poole, Fred Halstead, Michael Zen, Jack Deveau, and Joe Gage) influenced not only the gay erotic film industry, but also an evolving gay community gestalt -- see Wikipedia in "Personal Details - Links".
