The series centers on a formerly filthy rich video store magnate Johnny Rose, his soap star wife Moira, and their two kids, über-hipster son David and socialite daughter Alexis, who suddenly find themselves broke. They are forced to live in Schitt's Creek, a small depressing town they once bought as a joke.

On their way to drop off Alexis at the airport, David stops to scout a potential wedding venue and holds things up. After a week in the closet, Moira finally emerges, and with a sudden newfound lease on life, she convinces Johnny to join her for a romantic picnic by the creek.

David is embarrassed by a childhood issue that resurfaces, and when Patrick is so understanding, it only makes David spiral further. Alexis helps Moira join social media, and while at first resistant, once she gets the hang of it, Moira can’t seem to get enough.

After her short-lived stint with Larry Air, Stevie makes a big career decision.

Jocelyn helps out David and Patrick at the store and proves to be a top-notch salesperson, much to David’s annoyance.

Meanwhile, the new motel is proving to be a money pit for Johnny, which has him worried about paying for David’s lavish catering bill for the wedding.
