"Created in 1946 by Frederick Ashton to Cesar Franck's concerto for piano and orchestra of the same title, ''Symphonic Variations'' is plotless, neoclassical in idiom and closely related to the structure and dimensions of its music. ..." [NY Times]
While this may not have been the greatest performance of ''Symphonic Variations'' the world has ever seen [NY Times], to me it seemed nearly flawless (besides, how would I know otherwise). While there were a few almost unnoticeable slips and infinitesimal lacks of coordination, to me it made the performance real. They were not automatons, but highly skilled honest-to-god humans doing what they clearly loved to do -- dance beautifully! A pit-of-your-stomach joy!
