Our hero makes a languid cruise of the city's hot spots picking up sex with other man-boys. They really all look to be clones with the same hair and pubic bushes (long before our modern vogue of manscaping). While the film has its erotic sequences, it is not porn - that is, it does not seem to be designed to produce an arousal response. I would not call Equation to an Unknown representational of 1980's gay porn. Perhaps Savel's thrust is that sex is not a path to "happiness," "contentment" - the "unknown?" Besides it's exhausting.
