Two best friends from Berlin win a trip to Greece. On their excursion, they get lost on an island. They wander in the woods until they find an abandoned village where they encounter a mysterious creature, who calls himself Hercules. They spend the night together in a cave and dream a mystical dream. On the next day, nothing between the two will be like it was before.. Boring. Slow. Sub-mediocre acting. If there was a point to it all, I never got to it -- fell asleep.

Cuba Si is a romp through gay Cuba with girlfriend i had met while there on vacation.Gay bars are hidden away in the suburbs but totally worth it to see over the top Cuban drag queens.
At an underground gay party on the edge of Havana, a Cuban man warned me, "if the police show up, run as fast and as far as you can." Gays, lesbians and transsexuals in Cuba are always under the watchful eye of police and government. Cuba, Si documents my adventures in Cuba where I met my partner Aida while on vacation.
While only four minutes long, it's hardly even worth that effort.

Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful Government minister, well-off and with a loving wife. All this is threatened when Mrs Cheveley appears in London with damning evidence of a past misdeed. Sir Robert turns for help to his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer and the despair of his father. Goring knows the lady of old, and, for him, takes the whole thing pretty seriously. "The BBC produced a version [of the play] which was broadcast in 1969 as part of their Play of the Month series. ... It is available on DVD as part of The Oscar Wilde Collection box-set." An Ideal Husband is said to be Oscar Wilde's second most popular play, after The Importance of Being Earnest. It is a satire on politics and hypocritical upper classes, especially of Britain. I found it witty, but not as funny as The Importance of Being Earnest.
It was during the production of the play in 1895 that Wilde was arrested for "gross indecency" (homosexuality) and his name was publicly removed from the play. Wilde is eventually imprisoned. See Movie Wilde

Jack intends to propose to Gwendolen Fairfax (Amanda Redman). That is until he discovers that she loves him because his name is Ernest. He sets about being rechristened. And when Cecily intends to meet her bad cousin Ernest, and Algy seizes the opportunity, it will take the imperious Lady Bracknell (Dame Joan Plowright), Miss Prism's (Gemma Jones') recollections about her handbag, and an army list to clear the matter up, and allow true love to run its course. Two young gentlemen living in 1890s England use the same pseudonym ("Ernest") on the sly, which is fine until they both fall in love with women using that name, which leads to a comedy of mistaken identities... "Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" is a comedy constructed out of thin air. It is not really about anything. There are two romances at the center, but no one much cares whether the lovers find happiness together. Their purpose is to make elegant farce out of mistaken identities, the class system, mannerisms, egos, rivalries, sexual warfare and verbal playfulness." [Roger Ebert]
"The last line ('I've now realized for the first time in my life the vital importance of being earnest') takes on an interesting spin if we know that "earnest" was a vernacular term for "gay" in 1895. Thus the closing line may subvert the entire play, although not to the surprise of anyone who has been paying attention." [Roger Ebert]

Richard and I revisited Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Ernest near the end of our first week COVID 16 social isolation. It somehow seemed appropriate. We first saw Importance as a stage production many, many years ago (neither of us can remember when or where, and Richard's famous ticket stub collection has failed us.) We both love it (I perhaps more than him). This production rewritten as a movie has most of the elegant and memorable lines of the original. But I miss the audience/actor interpay experience of real people saying the lines. Richard most likes Judi Dench as Lady Bracknell.

National treasure and Poirot star David Suchet starred as the formidable Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s much loved masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest. Directed by Adrian Noble, (Amadeus, The King’s Speech, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language. Two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff (Philip Cumbus – regular player at Shakespeare’s Globe) and the utterly reliable John Worthing J.P., (Downton Abbey’s Michael Benz) lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax (Emily Barber) and Cecily Cardew (Imogen Doel). The gallants must then grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions, and with the formidable Lady Bracknell.

Before gay marriage was even dreamed of, portraitist Don Bachardy fell in love with author Christopher Isherwood. Their legendary relationship began on the beach at Malibu in 1956 and continued until Isherwood's death in 1986. Beautifully executed and movingly told, Chris & Don is one the greatest gay romances ever, and it's a documentary!

Writer Christopher Isherwood was born near Manchester, England in 1904. After college, he headed straight into a writing career. He moved to Berlin in 1929 to be with his friend W.H. Auden. Falling in love with the place and pretty boys he stayed there until the Nazis started to make things uncomfortable for gay men. His experiences in Berlin were later distilled into his "Berlin Stories" which was adapted for film as Cabaret. In 1939 Isherwood and Auden fled Germany and came to the U.S. They moved to California where they discovered Eastern religions and even more sexy boys. It was not until 1956 when this fabled gay love story begins. Brought to life by a multi-media treasure trove, the story of Chris & Don will grip you to the end. The film features lots of interview footage with Bachardy as well as archival footage, rare home movies (with glimpses of friends W.H. Auden, Igor Stravinsky and Tennessee Williams), reenactments, and, most sweetly, whimsical animations based on the cat-and-horse cartoons the pair used in their personal correspondence. Theirs is a love story that needs to be seen.

-- Scott Cranin

Christopher Isherwood was one of the pioneers of gay literature; this is his story.

Depicts the remarkable life of artist Don Bachardy and his relationship with the distinguished writer Christopher Isherwood. Includes footage shot by Chris and Don in the 1950s and interviews with Leslie Caron, John Boorman, Liza Minnelli, and others. Isherwood and Bachardy were open about their life together, regardless of the waves it caused. This was during a period when gay relationships were not acceptable. The age difference in their relationship brought obvious personal problems that had to be addressed. Don often felt disregarded by Chris's famous friends and frequently was. Nevertheless, Bachardy pursued his art career with great energy, painting and drawing every day. Finding a vocation gave Don a sense of fulfillment and independence. He began to realize that he could function independently, which made him question whether he wanted to stay with Isherwood. Don toyed with leaving the relationship and striking out on his own, however he decided not to as he realized his love for Chris was too important. During the 1970s, Chris and Don began to collaborate on various writing projects, such as "Frankenstein: The True Story", an unusual take on Mary Shelley's famous novel. In 1981, Isherwood was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Bachardy nursed him throughout the course of the disease and for the last six months of Chris' life, Don gave up painting any one else but him. What began as way to spend more time together, quickly became the project of a lifetime, a project Chris and Don did together until the very end. After Isherwood's death, Bachardy's career has continued to flourish. A number of books about Bachardy's art have been published, the latest, Stars in My Eyes. Bachardy's work resides in many permanent collections around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Smithsonian Institute, and The Norton Simon Museum. The problem with large studios (Sony Pictures Classics) taking over the distribution of a film - and this is a fine film - is that they are so adept at their publicity that they can raise expectations to the point where we can be disappointed when we finally see it· I suppose we should have expected some disappoint· I, at least, had unreasonable expectations·

Numerous New York City-dwellers come to the exclusive club Shortbus to work out problems in their sexual relationships. Rob and Sophia are a happily married couple, except for the fact that she has never experienced sexual climax. This irony follows her to work, because she is a couples counselor who frequently has to deal with the sexual issues other couples have. Two of her patients are Jamie and James, a gay couple who have been monogamous for five years and counting. James wants to bring other men in to the relationship, and his own history with depression may hint at an ulterior motive. Ceth (Pronounced like Seth) may be the perfect addition to their family, but Caleb, a voyeur from across the street, may have his own ideas about that. Sophia visits Severin, a dominatrix with secrets of her own to reveal. [IMDB]

Writer/director John Cameron Mitchell follows up the cult classic HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH with another salacious slice of sex-laden cinema. Mitchell interweaves three separate tales of highly sexed and sexually frustrated New Yorkers, all of whom find some kind of salvation at an underground club named Shortbus. Anything goes at Shortbus--wild orgies between people from different ages, backgrounds, and sexual preferences are treated as commonplace, and most of the sex scenes shot through Mitchell's voyeuristic lens are completely unsimulated. Mitchell allows little time for his audience to pause for breath, opening SHORTBUS with a frantic collage of copulation and carnality that features most of his central characters. These include Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist who has never reached full orgasm; gay couple James (Paul Dawson)--who begins the movie by fellating himself--and Jamie (PJ DeBoy); and Severin (Lindsay Beamish), a dominatrix who finds herself unable to find true love. Mitchell lets his cast of characters unravel their tales of woe, interspersing the touching and mostly sad stories with eye-popping scenes from Shortbus and swooping birds-eye shots of a computer simulated version of New York City. The director also draws heavily on an indie-rock soundtrack, making repeated and effective use of the beautiful "Winters Love" by Brooklyn-based group Animal Collective. But it's the sex scenes that will really get tongues wagging, and its testament to Mitchell's fearless and uncompromising vision that he depicts sexual acts that run the full coital gamut, from amusing to titillating to shocking. Amid all the boundary-pushing there is a tender heart buried in SHORTBUS's central narrative--which revolves around the search for identity and acceptance--but less sensitive viewers who seek amusement in the singing of the National Anthem into a prominent orifice will also find plenty to enjoy here. [Rotten Tomatos]
Now, "I wouldn't be where I am today " (R Perrin) if I hadn't seen a fair amount of erotic play, but this movie can't compare to director Mitchell's genius "Hedgwig" -- I acquired this film in 2009 as a gift (in fact, I ended up with two copies), and have seen clips and read commentaries, but didn't get around to actually viewing it until seven years later -- I knew the scene, and the fun of it, but never knew anyone with Mitchell's characters angst -- I suppose we are to believe that the protaganists were riding the shortbus (a term, by the way, that I fine extraordinarily demeaning, right up there with the "N" word), but what of it -- should we care much about them?

A very personal story that is both funny and poignant, TORCH SONG TRILOGY chronicles a New Yorker's search for love, respect and tradition in a world that seems not especially made for him.

Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein re-creates his role as the unsinkable Arnold Beckoff in this film adaptation of the smash Broadway play TORCH SONG TRILOGY. A very personal story that is both funny and poignant, TORCH SONG TRILOGY chronicles a New Yorker's search for love, respect and tradition in a world that seems not especially made for him. From Arnold's hilarious steps toward domestic bliss with a reluctant school teacher, to his first truly promising love affair with a young fashion model, Arnold's greatest challenge remains his complicated relationship with his mother. But armed with a keenly developed sense of humor and oftentimes piercing wit, Arnold continues to test the commonly accepted terms of endearment--and endurance--in a universally affecting story that confirms that happiness is well worth carrying a torch for. Written by Michael Braem
It is hard to compare the stage production with the film. The quality of stage performances fade with time; but the movie is enduring, and therefore has greater influence on ones perceptions. Stage productions of the individual acts were produced off-broadway in 1978 and 1979. We saw the stage production before it moved to Broadway. The Broadway production opened on June 10, 1982 at the Little Theatre, where it ran for 1,222 performances. It received two Emmy awards. Both the stage and film productions were breakthrough events, helping to bring gay themed theater into the mainstream. (Prometheus-2013)

Told through the eyes of an Australian television reporter who moved to the UK to escape depression, we learn that sometimes you can find happiness where you least expect. We follow the journey of 3 characters in the club: the lesbian coach fighting misogyny, even in the gay world. The semi-pro player who spiraled into a depression after his coming out didn't go as planned. And the prop who discovered he was a drag queen through the club.

"Australian television news reporter, EAMMON ASHTON-ATKINSON had originally moved to the UK to escape depression. What he found was both love with his future husband and an opportunity to indulge in his favorite passion of playing rugby. He joined the KINGS CROSS STEELERS in London, the World’s first ever all-gay rugby team and this completed his happiness.
"Ashton-Atkinson had hoped to be part of the Steelers Team in 2018 that were off to take part in the BINGHAM CUP TOURNAMENT in Amsterdam but an injury made that impossible. Instead he accompanied the Team with his camera and what he filmed ended up being edited into this unplanned and completely delightful documentary.
"Ashton-Atkinson is very non apologetic from the start. This film is very personal. He says that this isn’t just a story about being gay : its not even a story about playing rugby . It’s a story about struggle , acceptance, searching for happiness and finding a place to belong. " [QueerGuru]

Hugo Beltrán (Jesús Mosquera) is a young, beautiful and carefree stripped who wakes up one day at a cruise alongside a burned corpse after a night of partying and excesses. It is discovered that it is the corpse of the husband of his lover, Macarena Medina (Cristina Castaño), with whom he was in a sexual high-voltage steamy relationship. He is declared guilty and sentenced to fifteen years of prison after a badly done trial, although Hugo, despite not remembering any of what happened that night, is more than sure he wasn't actually the murderer, but the victim of a setup to frame him. Seven years later, he receives the visit of Triana Marín (María Pedraza), a young lawyer who offers to help him in representation of an important lawyer buffet, reopening the case and scheduling a new trial in which Hugo will finally get the chance to prove his innocence. Even though Hugo distrusts the offer, he accepts and is released from prison under conditional liberty and with the new trial pending. Between Hugo's release from prison and the new trial, he and Triana will have to work together to uncover the complex plot that got Hugo in jail - which will be easier said than done, due to both of them being completely different: Triana is a working, responsible and brilliant lawyer with a promising future, whereas Hugo is a vengeance-thirsty ex-convict and night-lover who is considered a murderer by everyone else. -0 Review: QueerGuru Toy Boy "was so heteronormative, and that whilst middle-aged women screamed, every homo we knew just yawned. Just parading a few sets of naked abs is simply not enough these days. And even more annoying is when the actors are applauded for being 'so brave' for taking on roles that required them to be semi-naked. " (Roger Walker Dack March 9th, 2020)

A narrated history of Hand-in-Hand Films, including excerpts from LEFT-HANDED, DRIVE, ADAM & YVES, and James Bidgood's unreleased BAGDAD.
Unlike Erotikus, which is a history of the gay movie, this flick is a history of Hand-in-Hand and how its three founders (Jack Deveau, Robert Alvarez and Jaap Penraat) dedicated themselves to moviemaking.
In addition to the sex segments, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes explanations of how adult films are made; segments from several films, and unreleased material (including bloopers and out-takes).
Sex, sex, sex, both romantic and frantic, include classic segments and copulating lust. The action is hot, post-Stonewall, pre-AIDS fucking! Interviews, masculine men having sex and/or making love, humor, selected highlights, and much more.
Films featured include Left-Handed (Hand-in-Hand's first and also the first gay film to be fully scripted and include a musical score), Peter de Rome's Hot Pants (a go-go boy jacking off), Ballet Down the Highway, Adam and Yves, Wanted: Billy the Kid, The Night Before, Drive, Bagdad, and several others.
The narrator also reminds us that after Left-Handed, movies began to include story to draw the audience in, and that the camera no longer just photographed sex -- it now became a part of it.

Todd and Rory are intellectual soul mates. He might be gay. She might not care. A romantic-comedy drama with a twist; a love story without the thrill of copulation.
