transgender
Growing up in 1950s England in an intolerant and uninformed world, young Chris Winters struggles to fit into the gender roles dictated by wider society. A more than tough childhood left behind, Chris meets dream woman Julie, and life lightens a little, but the growing feeling that their life is a life half lived haunts Chris, who is torn by 'what ifs'. Chris imagines what might have been, and is finally struck by the realisation that for some decisions there is no right answer, and that it's those that truly define us.

Leonard Soloway's Broadway is a feature documentary. Through interviews with John Slattery, Olympia Dukakis, Elizabeth Ashley, Tovah Feldshuh etc... photos and rare archival material this project captures a Broadway few ever see, from the vantage of one of the most admired and loved Broadway Producers and General Managers you've probably never heard of. Narrated by Cambell Scott this film is an inside look at the "business" of "show business". In a career that has spanned more than seventy years, Soloway has been involved with over 150 productions, including Waiting in the Wings with Lauren Bacall and Rosemary Harris, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, A Moon For the Misbegotten and Mark Twain Tonight! with Hal Holbrook. Those and many of his other productions collected more than 40 Tony Awards, 21 Drama Desk Awards and two Pulitzer Prizes. In addition to launching many careers from performers to craftspeople, he has worked with veteran stage actors including Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst as well as film star Paul Newman whose revival of the classic "Our Town" on Broadway was facilitated by Mr. Soloway. At the age of 90, Leonard Soloway's love for the theatre has not dimmed. As he faces the challenges of a new production, from raising money to weathering the anticipation of reviews, he is totally engaged in the process with an ever ready smile and a wink. Even as we witness his latest production reach a disappointing end, in the course of this film Leonard Soloway wouldn't trade what he does (as Irving Berlin once wrote in song) "for a pot of gold". And he is already planning his next show.

Much like Assigned Sex, (see) America in Transition confronts the issues facing transgender people of color, and how continued attacks by the Trump White House push a marginalized people even further to the edge. Each episode follows a personal story. The standout: episode four, which recounts the story of Z, a transgender former marine leading the charge against North Carolina’s HB2, a so-called bathroom bill designed to discriminate against transgender people. I am confused about American in Transition AIT is used to identify individual film shorts in their series. These film shorts are longer and include episodes not in the "Digitized series" (see), available for streaming from Revry. The versions available in this catalog entry apparently are not available from Revry.

From their website:

"America in Transition (AIT) is a documentary web series and community engagement campaign that explores what social change really looks like from the perspective of trans people from marginalized communities.

"Director, André Pérez, founded the Trans Oral History Project seven years ago motivated by the isolation he felt growing up in a military family in Virginia. Join Pérez on his journey across the country to document real life for an two spirit educator, a suicidal veteran, a child battling their school and more.

"While 2015 was heralded as the “trans tipping point,” North Carolina just passed the most regressive civil rights legislation in 50 years. Trans people are fighting for our lives in a fragmented social landscape. Right now is a pivotal moment to educate the general public about non-white, non-urban trans experiences because the mainstream media leaves out the very voices that are most under attack. AIT episodes will encourage audiences to take action in support of and in solidarity with these communities.

THE SERGEANT is the story of the dark inner struggle of Master Sergeant Albert Callan to overcome the overwhelming attraction he feels for one of his charges. In the staid and stifling environment of a post-World War II army post in France, Callan's deeply repressed attraction to other men surfaces when he encounters handsome Private Swanson. Maintaining the rugged "man's man" image of a war hero, Callan barks orders to his underlings. Later, lonely in his solitude, he recalls the frightening experiences of war and the events that led to this crossroads. Filled with self-loathing and unable to act on the natural attraction he feels for Swanson, Callan's affection festers into antagonism. He pushes Swanson constantly with verbal assaults and undeserved punishments.

On a U.S. Army post circa 1948, a major who is an impotent, latent homosexual is married to an infantile birdbrain who never misses an opportunity to ridicule his masculine failings. He displaces his hostility by brutally flogging her horse and she retaliates by humiliating him before a houseful of guests, repeatedly slashing him across the face with her riding crop. She is also committing adultery with the officer next door, who's wife cut off her nipples with garden shears after the death of her baby. She has sought solace in the ministrations of her effeminate houseboy. The sixth character, coveted by the major, is a darkly handsome noncom, a voyeur and lingerie-fondler, given to nightly appearances as a peeping tom in the birdbrain's bedroom and daily sessions of horseback riding in the middle of the woods stark naked.
There is a fort in the South where a few years ago a murder was committed.” So begins John Huston’s adaptation of Carson McCullers’s Reflections in a Golden Eye. Overflowing with gothic atmosphere, the film circles around the stoic, marble-mouthed Major Weldon Penderton, a character rigorously embodied by Marlon Brando. He silently pines for a mysterious young soldier (Robert Forster, in his first screen role) who has secrets of his own, like a fondness for naked horseback riding and a peculiar fixation with the negligee of the Major’s wife, Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor, in a performance so tempestuous it rivals her turn in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Less inhibited is the neighbors’ houseboy Anacleto, a fey, scene-stealing esthete who refuses to conform to the strictures of the military environment that surrounds him, making him something of a rare bird in this stirring examination of repressed longings and their unbearable weight.

The story follows four people who live in the same building, but avoid each other because of the differences in their assets, sexual habits, nationality and religion. On one floor in a very spacious apartment lives Vjeko Kralj, a 60-something, a somewhat affluent Croatian schoolteacher. By day he leads a highly disciplined life between teaching and caring for his elderly senile father. At night he dons women’s clothing and hits the local bars. Downstairs in a very cramped small apartment lives Maja Samardzic (a middle-aged nurse with her policeman husband who struggle to make ends meet each week. He is of Serbian heritage who, however, fought with the Croats during their ethnic wars. Their paths never cross with the teacher until one night Vjeko is brutally attacked by a bunch of homophobic thugs, and he is brought into the hospital where Maja is on duty. Now that Vjeko is temporary unable to be his father’s caregiver Maja takes over the role, and in return she asks that Vjeko help her dyslexic husband study for a exam on the Croatian Constitution that he needs to pass to be promoted to Sergeant. The two men do not get along well at all as asides from their different social backgrounds, the policeman is Serbian whilst Vjeko is a Croat, and there is still no love lost between these two [adapted from QueerGuru] I was much surprised by this film. I watched it on Dekkoo, whose catelog in my few is dominated by grade C films. I did not expect much. I also know little about the history of Serbia and Croatia. It took me a while to figure out the interpersonal dynamics. Bur the acting is superb. The story has twists that kept my interest. Well worth watching.

The 2018 SXSW Audience Award-winning feature film debut by Gabriel Silverman and Fiona Dawson, TransMilitary follows the Emmy-nominated short film Transgender, at War and in Love. Around 15,500 transgender people serve in the U.S. military (notably the largest transgender employer in the U.S.), where they must conceal their gender identity because military policies ban their service. TransMilitary chronicles the lives of four individuals (Senior Airman Logan Ireland, Corporal Laila Villanueva, Captain Jennifer Peace and First Lieutenant El Cook) defending their country's freedom while fighting for their own. They put their careers and their families' livelihoods on the line by coming out as transgender to top brass officials in the Pentagon in hopes of attaining the equal right to serve. The ban was lifted in 2016, but with President Trump now trying to reinstate it, their futures hang in the balance again. (Jamie Coughlin)

Fumi and Kazu have a lot to teach us about love. When they decide to stick their necks out and create the first LGBTQ+ law firm in Japan, they are drawn into the lives of people searching for protection and support. Despite their own relationship having no legal status, they work pro-bono for long hours, all the while foster-parenting a teenager. We meet with a colourful cast of misfits, dissidents and artists – from a delightful eccentric being prosecuted for her kitschy vagina sculptures, to a troubled outsider who, as the child of an ‘immoral woman’, has no legal identity. A saying is repeated throughout the film, that one must ‘read the air’ – conform to the tacit conservatism that forbids sexual diversity. With love, humour and serious legal chops, Fumi and Kazu do exactly the opposite.

CLASS A, follows three LGBTQ, addicts, who battle their chosen drug personified in the flesh.
"The new short film Class A sheds light on LGBTQ addicts through the stories of Jenny (Krystal Joy Brown), Dan (Kieran Mulcare), and Brad (Cameron Moir). Their struggles with cocaine, heroin, and crystal meth, respectively, are depicted in distorted, isolating scenes where their drug of choice is personified. Throughout the short, the characters begin to see the drugs not as a friend but an unrelenting foe." (Advocate)
