While I lived through this era of preAIDS exuberant culture, I had little interest in it. It was not mainstream gay. The film features what seems like hundreds of characters, only a few of which I had heard of. Didn't learn much about Anthony Lopez. Film never seems to get below the superficial. It was a subculture of which I new little, nor desired to know more. Lopez does not now add to my interest. I'm too plebian I guess.

His wealthy banker father, Anthony P. Kirby, and his snobbish mother, strongly disapprove of the match. When the Kirbys are invited to dinner to become better acquainted with their future in-laws, things do not turn out the way Alice had hoped.	As a junior in High School (1958) I played Mr. Kirby in the stage production by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The original production of the play premiered on Broadway in 1936, and played for 838 performances. In the play, Boris Kolenkhov, a Russian who escaped to America shortly before the Russian Revolution, lifts Mr. Kirby high over his head and slams Mr. Kirby to the stage floor. I was supposed to land on the floor with my feet hitting first (not my back), making a large noise. Pete B. played a Russian ballet master. While a strong boy, he was not always able to pull off the stunt; I had a sore back for weeks. What a blast! In 2014 Richard & I saw You Can't Take It With You at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway with James Earl Jones. as Grandpa Martin Vanderhof. I was very disappointed. The performance was very flat, no gusto.
