AIDS; HIV; queer heritage
For the first time, doctors and nurses who cared for Britain's first AIDS patients in the 1980s tell their stories. They describe a dark time when, with little treatment on offer, their role was to help these young men deal with early, painful and often undignified deaths. The extraordinary situation saw the medics bend and break the rules to provide some comfort and fun for their patients. They formed close friendships with the men they were treating, went to their funerals, mourn them to this day. But that important work took a substantial toll. This film comes when the legacy of that period is in danger of being forgotten. Black and white photographs of young gay men ill and dying on hospital wards are intercut with the honest testimony from the nurses and doctors who fought to give their patients the best death they could in the worst circumstances. I was only able to watch ten minutes or so of this film· It was too painful· Richard and I saw several of our friends die· The stories and images of this film are those of the lives we knew.

coming of age
Friends Frederik and Mathias share a common experience but have very different reactions. My first gay experience at a very young age was not unlike the events in the film. There was not just one. Whilst I embrace the experiences, apparently my friend did not, and we went our different ways. A well done short.

gay heritage
Based on an unrealised film script written in 1964 for The Homosexual Law Reform Society, a British organisation that campaigned for the decriminalisation of homosexual relations between men, 'The Colour of His Hair' merges drama and documentary into an impressionistic meditation on queer life before and after the partial legalisation of homosexuality in 1967. I couldn't find (although my research was superficial) how this film came to be made in 2017, more than fifty years after the homosexual law reform debates in Great Britain, it very much has the flavor of the propoganda used by proponents of reform at the time.

Marc and Fred went to war when they were refused a double bed at a remote Christian guest house. They won in court and now they're back to claim their conjugal rights. Triumph turns to terror when another guest arrives, who they think might have something sinister in mind. Their weekend of fun turns into a bloody battle for survival in this smart, brutally funny and dark thriller. Written by Producer Not without some weaknesses, but overall pretty good if you are able to suspend disbelief, which I find I have to do for most thrillers.

Christopher, fifteen years old, has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs Shears' dog Wellington, he records each fact about the event in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of the murder. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world. While reading my emails, I noticed that The Curious Incident Of The Dog in The Night was playing its final performance at our local "art" theatre· Seeing the announcement reminded me that this film had been on my "wish list" for some time· After exploring its availability on dvd and vod, and not finding it, I hollered down to Richard: "Want to go to the movies tonight?" After learning it's title, he surprising agreed, even though we had but a short time to get to are local art theater· Curious … is a film of a live stage show produced by the National Theater in London. Transferring a stage production to film is fraught with dangers, and rarely successful· And the Long Island Village of Patchogue is infamous for it's parking problems, but we managed to sneak into one of the few remaining free stalls in the village lot across the street from the small arts theater· We were a bit hassled by the time we settle into our seats·
We were enthralled by the film· Not only was the play well written and imaginatively staged, we thought the filming enhanced the production. The camera was able get views and angles that would have been unavailable to audience members· Except for one crucial scene, the sound was excellent; the exception being a piece that was spoken as a whisper, and Richard and I were able to piece to gather its essence after the show.
"Adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s best-selling 2003 novel about an autistic boy’s coming-of-age, this is one of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway." [NYT]
