Brothers of the Night is a gritty documentary about a small group of young Bulgarian Roma men who flock to Vienna in search of a better life. When they first arrive they can barely speak any German at all and find that, just like back home, there are no jobs for them. They end up in the seedy Cafe Rüdiger in the working class district of Margareten where they find that, by providing sexual services to the old gay men who hang out there, they can earn a great deal more than of the elusive legitimate jobs could have offered them. Notes
I don't often think about hustling as a profession· Here we see a fraternity of poor young Roma "brothers" who have come to Vienna looking for work· They discover the sex trade, especially a niche of servicing gay men· They all appear to be straight-identifying men, although in some cases their attachments are very personal and intimate· Many are married and have wives and children back in Bulgaria· They do not seem to disdain their customers for being gay, just old. They dream of a better place; they want cars, a house, a happy home life· The film appears to be a honest documentary· Powerful and melancholy·
BTW-- The dvd cover art is an invention of the publicist· The two boys riding a motorcycle has no significant place in the film· I guess all "bad-boys" ride motorcycles? I would not call these boy-men "bad-boys·" But they are survivalists.
