The short film Pourquoi mon fils? (English title: Why my son?) tells the story of two young guys, Thomas and Louis, coming out to their parents. They have been in a relationship for a while, and decide to come out to their parents. While Louis’ coming out goes very well, Thomas’ coming out doesn’t go the way he hoped. His father does not accept him being gay, and enters a state of uncontrollable rage. [ROB.lgbt.]

Notes
I came across Pourquoi Mon Fils while surfing the other night (the Yankees/Red Sox game had been rained out, or something)· I am a fan of film shorts especially from new up-and-coming filmmakers· This is another "coming out" domestic drama· But, enough already! I know - young authors/filmmakers are often told to write about what they know, but unfortunately, when you are young you usually do not know that you are young· Young filmmakers need to make these films (most of the time it is all they can do, given the logistics and finances of film making)· But can a particular story be told in a short-film genre? Or should it be placed on the shelf for a possible future project?
The only person who rang true to me is Louis's father, who is most annoyed that this little domestic drama is interrupting his evening's decompression/TV entertainment· If I were Louis, I might have been angry with my dad that my "most important center of the world" event was virtually ignored· On the other hand, Thomas' father's rage to-self-loathing reaction is incomprehensible· Part of the problem, of course, is that this is a film-short· Thomas' father's backstory is hinted at, but not developed· My assessment - a film that need not be avoided, and that if you run across it while surfing, take a look· It's only 21 minutes long.
