In the years before Inuit culture was completely eclipsed by the colonial enterprise of traveling missionaries, a half Danish-half Inuit anthropologist named Knud Rasmussen embraced the task of documenting the heritage and lifestyle of the Igloolik Inuit nation. Igloolik actors who are descendents of the films’ characters enact this cinematic version of Rasmussen’s journals, which chronicled the teachings of the last great Igloolik shaman, Avva. This incredible “re-living” of the former teachings and practices of the Igloolik community is a profound piece of cultural heritage, which offers a unique window into Inuit life and culture. |
