THE CAR MAN is one of modern dance’s most thrilling and entertaining shows, and a signature production for Matthew Bourne’s company, New Adventures. First seen in 2000, when it won the EVENING STANDARD’s Award for “Musical Event of the Year”. This recording was made at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London during the production’s most recent revival. THE CAR MAN is loosely based on Georges Bizet’s popular opera, CARMEN, and has one of the most instantly recognizable scores in New Adventures’ repertory, brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory of the opera becomes a greasy garage-diner in the American mid-west of the 1960s. The arrival of a handsome stranger disturbs the dreams and passions of those who live and work there. Fueled by heat and desire, the townsfolk are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greet, lust, betrayal and revenge. Lez Brotherston’s epic design and Chris Davey’s evocative lighting perfectly complement Matthew Bourne’s vivid choreographic storytelling, which draws on a wealth of cinematic references. Together with the glorious dancing of a wonderful cast, they create a delightful, dangerous and ultimately uncompromising vision of small-town America.

Notes
Matthew Bourne is a genius! There are purest's who would say that ballet/dance is not well suited for film, and must be seen on stage to be fully appreciated. Nonsense. There are also advantages to film. Among them is the ability of close ups and facial expressions. And the ability to occasionally focus on "side" actions which are often missed when the full stage is the only view available. This is a ballet and many of the conventions of ballet are used. It is also a superb example of modern dance. My only complaint, and it is minor, is a wish that a wider aspect ratio were to have been used. The stage sometimes feels cropped.

"Thrilling from the off, there’s blood, sweat, and sex aplenty as the languor of a long summer yields to lust: the cast of male mechanics are bold and brash and boorish, their brawling and bare-knuckle fighting visceral and brutal and believable and their sexuality crass and explicit." [CultureFly] As one would expect, homoerotism flows naturally from Bourne.
