Day 1 - Thursday, August 17

On Friday evening, we were to catch the ferry from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.  This meant that I'd have to be at the ferry terminal by 8 p.m., requiring a very early start.  Knowing the often difficult traffic around Boston, I decided to head up toward Portland on Thursday, and make an easy trip of it.  While I'd intended take the 10 am ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, I, as usual, ran late.  Finally got out and caught the noon ferry.  Met a young Harley biker from Nassau County who was on his way to Vermont.  Worked for one of the water supply companies.  Road together to Hartford, CN where we parted.  Had some difficulty figuring out the traffic patterns in Bridgeport, as there was a lot of highway reconstruction.  But otherwise the trip generally uneventful.  Traffic around Boston awful as expected, and I was glad to have taken an extra day.  Stopped for the night at the Royal Coach Motel in Hampton, NH.  While an aging "mom & pop," I paid $70 for a room -- and thought it greatly overpriced for the mediocre quality. This was the most paid for a night's lodging anywhere on the trip. Day total: 220 miles.

Day 2 - Friday, August 18

The next day, got an early start and took US Route 1 up along the coast, instead of I-95, in order to see more of the local scenery. Went through downtown Portsmouth, NH; then along the coast of Maine through York Harbor, Ogunquit, and Kennebunk.  Arrived in Portland around noon; confirmed the Prince of Fundy ferry reservations, talked to Sharon on the telephone to confirm her arrival, and after lunch road around the city for a bit.  Noticed a narrow gage railroad being maintained by a local railroading club, and took a ride. The waterfront in Portland was very busy with tourists, including a fair number of bikers. Had a nice supper at a Thai restaurant, and went down to the ferry terminal to wait for Sharon, arriving there about 7:45 p.m.  Relaxing, and not particularly eventful, and glad that I hadn't tried to do the run from Long Island to Portland all in one day.  Light rain off and on in the evening.  Day total:  70 miles.  Trip total: 290 miles

Then, stress ...
