Anarawd's and Cadell's military skills were considerable. In 880 or 881, the brothers soundly defeated the Mercians at the battle of Conway, avenging their father's death. After entering into a disasterous alliance with the Danes of East Anglia -- they ravaged Gwynedd -- the brothers entered into alliance with the Saxon King Alfred of Wessex against the Danes. They were apparently successful in keeping the Danes at bay, and extended the family's powers to the include nearly all of south Wales. [See Cadell for a fuller discussion.].
